As Promised: The Story of Lucy

This page is going to reflect the stages in Lucy's Recovery.  As you remember, I had her boarded in Montgomery, Tx because they thought she had saracoptic mange and was heartworm positive.  When I went to bring her home, they thought she only had a low thyroid, however, when after I got a second opinion, she did indeed have a raging case of saracoptic mange.  She is recovering slowly and this her story of recovery.

This is Lucy.  Lucy was found at the Montgomery Shelter and she is covered with mange as you can see.  Not only is she thin but she has had puppies and is HW+.  Yes, I would love to meet her previous owners one night in a dark alley.  At the moment, I've had her boarded at a Montgomery Veternarian to begin her mange treatments and to get spayed.  She will be coming home with me as a foster next Saturday.  Here she will begin her recovery and soon, she will be taking her rightful place on the Happy Tails page as a beautiful and whole pup.

This is Lucy just 3 weeks into recovery from mange.  She's endured 3 dips already and her hair is finally beginning to grow on her back and face.  Her face is now fully coated and her ears are no longer scabbed.  She is still bald on her behind and thighs.  She cannot begin her heart worm treatment until her coat has regenerated itself completely.

If you look closely, you can still see some bald and flakey patches on Lucy's back, but look at the sparkle coming back in her eyes!

It's been determined that Lucy did not have microfalria (baby heartworms) in her bloodstream so she's been given a shot of Ivermectin to hurry her recovery from mange along.  You can tell she is definitely going to be a beautiful dog when she's fully recovered.  She will begin Heart Worm Treatment in a week.  This is a very cruicial time for her as HW treatment is extremely dangerous.  For those of you who aren't familiar with it, the worms within the heart and bloodstream begin to die and as they do, they can forms clots and cause a stroke.  Please think positive thoughts as this little girl begins necessary treatment.

It has been determined, after all was said and done, that Lucy is HW negative. Believe me, this is a miracle because normally if they are diagnosed as positive..it's because they are indeed positive.  Well here is Lucy in her new bed she got in celebration of her new lease on life.  She is healthy and listed for adoption at www.minpinrescue.org (texas dogs).  The final picture you will see will be her with her new mommy or daddy as she takes her rightful place on my happy tails page.  Yes, this is a hard one to see leave me, but she's been through so much, she deserves a family that will love and spoil her and that she can love.  Thank you to everybody that visited Lucy through her recovery and wished her well wishes.

LUCY found her forever home today in Houston, Texas.  You might say, she picked her person.  She has interviewed many applicants, however, she seemed (in my eyes anyway) to sabotage each of the showings.  Today, we met with that special someone and Lucy immediately took to her.  This was the saddest day I've been through in a very long time - it's also the happiest one, to see my little girl start the new life she's waited so long to have. The last 6 months I've spent with Lucy rehabilitating her and getting her ready for this day, will always be fondly etched in my heart.   I miss her already, but look forward to pictures depicting life as it should be.
